Stunning Biodiversity: Raja Ampat is home to over 1,300 species of fish and 600 species of coral, making it one of the most biodiverse marine environments on the planet.
Pristine Reefs: The coral reefs in Raja Ampat are in excellent condition, providing breathtaking underwater landscapes.
Diverse Dive Sites: From mangroves and shallow reefs to deep walls and pinnacles, Raja Ampat offers a variety of dive sites suitable for all levels of divers.

Best Time to Dive

Cape Kri, Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat offers excellent diving conditions throughout the year, but for the best experience, plan your trip according to your preferences:

October to April: Calm seas and the best visibility make this the prime diving season. Ideal for spotting manta rays and other large pelagics.
May to September: Slightly rougher seas, but still good visibility and fewer crowds. A great time to see a different array of marine life.

Practical Tip: Book your liveaboard trip well in advance, especially if you're planning to visit during the peak season from October to April.

Dive Conditions

Water Temperature: The water temperature in Raja Ampat ranges from 27°C to 30°C (80°F to 86°F), providing comfortable diving conditions year-round.

Visibility: Typically ranges from 15 to 30 meters (50 to 100 feet), with the best visibility during the dry season from October to April.

Currents: Strong currents characterize Raja Ampat, bringing in nutrient-rich waters and supporting its diverse marine life. Divers should feel comfortable with drift diving and varying current conditions

Experience Level: While Raja Ampat offers dive sites suitable for all experience levels, some sites with strong currents and challenging conditions are better suited for advanced divers. Beginners should stick to the more sheltered sites and consider diving with experienced guides.

Liveaboard Diving in Indonesia

Sea Safari 8

One of the best ways to experience liveaboard diving in Indonesia is by embarking on a liveaboard adventure in Raja Ampat. Liveaboards allow you to access remote dive sites that are otherwise difficult to reach, offering a more immersive and comprehensive diving experience.

We offer a range of diving tours in Raja Ampat that cater to different preferences and budgets. Whether you are looking for a luxury liveaboard or a budget-friendly option, our diving tours provide the perfect way to explore the underwater wonders of Raja Ampat.

Our Raja Ampat dive packages are designed to offer you the best value for your diving trip. These packages typically include accommodation, meals, and multiple dives per day, allowing you to fully enjoy your diving adventure without any hassle.

Nitrox Diving

For those looking to extend their bottom time and enhance safety, Nitrox is widely available in Raja Ampat. Nitrox, or Enriched Air Nitrox (EAN), is a breathing gas that has a higher percentage of oxygen (22-40%) and a lower percentage of nitrogen than regular air. Here’s why diving with Nitrox can be a game-changer:

  • Extended Bottom Time: Nitrox allows for longer no-decompression limits compared to regular air. This is particularly beneficial for repetitive dives, which are common in liveaboard diving.
  • Reduced Nitrogen Absorption: With less nitrogen in the breathing mix, your body absorbs less nitrogen, reducing the risk of decompression sickness.
  • Less Fatigue: Many divers report feeling less fatigued after diving with Nitrox, making it ideal for the multiple-dive days typical in Raja Ampat.
  • Optimal for Deeper Dives: Although divers don’t typically use Nitrox for extremely deep dives, it excels for dives in the 18-30 meter (60-100 feet) range, covering many of Raja Ampat’s best sites.

Practical Tip: Ensure you're properly trained in the use of Nitrox, always analyze your tank before diving and set your dive computer to the correct Nitrox mix to ensure accurate tracking of your exposure.

Top Dive Sites in Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat boasts numerous world-class dive sites, each offering unique underwater experiences.

Practical Tip: Bring a reef hook for dive sites with strong currents. It's also advisable to have a surface marker buoy (SMB) for safety.

Here are some of the must-visit sites:

Marine Wildlife Sightings

The biodiversity in Raja Ampat is unmatched, making it a haven for marine enthusiasts. Here are some highlights:

Macro Critters: From pygmy seahorses and ornate ghost pipefish to nudibranchs and shrimp, the macro life is exceptionally diverse.
Large Pelagics: Encounter manta rays, reef sharks, wobbegongs, and even the occasional whale shark.
Reef Fish: Expect to see vibrant species such as parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, and anthias.
Corals: Raja Ampat is home to some of the most diverse and pristine coral reefs in the world, with over 550 species of hard corals.

Practical Tip: Bring a good quality underwater camera with a macro lens to capture the stunning details of the smaller marine life. A wide-angle lens is essential for photographing larger species and coral landscapes.

Diving Tips and Gear Recommendations

Wetsuit: A 3mm wetsuit is usually sufficient due to the warm water temperatures. If you tend to get cold, consider a 5mm.

Photography: Wide-angle lenses are great for capturing the expansive coral gardens and large pelagics, while a macro lens will help you get stunning shots of the smaller critters.

Currents: Be prepared for strong currents at certain sites. A reef hook can be useful.

Surface Intervals: Enjoy stunning island scenery and explore the local culture during your surface intervals.

Safety Tips

Stay Hydrated:Drink plenty of water before and after dives to avoid dehydration.

Check Your Gear: Always inspect your diving gear before each dive to ensure everything is functioning correctly.

Dive Within Limits: Know your limits and stick to your training level. Don't push beyond your comfort zone.

Buddy System: Always dive with a buddy and keep close communication throughout the dive.

Follow Dive Briefings: Pay attention to dive briefings from your guide and adhere to the planned dive profile.

Emergency Procedures: Familiarize yourself with emergency procedures and the location of safety equipment on the dive boat.

Avoid Overexertion: Take it easy and move slowly underwater to conserve energy and reduce air consumption.

Magnificent Komodo cruise and unforgettable memories thanks to Nicolas and the entire Wallacea team from MSY Seahorse. A big terima kasih to you!!! It was great, from the reception until the departure on the last day for the airport. Super organization and continuous adaptation of the schedule according to the conditions to make the most of the diving sites and activities. As a result, our whole group enjoyed macro diving, turtles, mantas, mobulas, sharks, tropical fish, drop-offs and gardens of rich and colorful corals,... The other activities were also very nice (walks to enjoy magnificent landscapes of the Indonesian islands, visit to the dragons, dinner under the stars, waterfall,…☺️) The team was always attentive, on and under the water, always smiling and wanting to please us. Meals, a moment of delight with varied and balanced cuisine taking into account everyone's requirements. Andy’s massages, a regenerating break! The boat, on a human scale, where you quickly feel at home. So, no choice, it was really wonderful Indonesia,..so thank you again for these unforgettable moments and I hope to see you again next year for a new cruise ☺️
