You never know what unique experiences you’ll have underwater on a 12-day crossing from the island of Ambon through the Banda Sea to Raja Ampat. With so many dives, from the sandy seafloor of Ambon to volcanic islands, and the stunning coral reefs of Raja Ampat, there are plenty of opportunities for rare marine life encounters. This trip, while diving off the island of Manuk, we were lucky enough to come across barrel sponges spawning. Barrel sponges are ancient filter-feeders found in the warm waters of Indonesia. Despite their seemingly immobile nature, these vibrant red creatures play a crucial role in the marine ecosystem, providing habitat for a diverse array of marine life, sheltering small fish and invertebrates within their labyrinth-like structures. Some barrel sponges are estimated to be over 2,000 years old! In Raja Ampat, another fascinating sight guests had the chance to witness was the hunt of the trevallies. These sleek predators move in synchronized packs, hunting anthias fish with lightning speed and agility. Watching them dart and weave through the coral formations is just one of the many exciting marine behaviours that can be seen in this vibrant marine paradise.
